On February 22, 2021, the international trade committee met to discuss Bill C-18, An Act to implement the Agreement on Trade Continuity between Canada and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As a member of the committee, I asked questions to The Hon. Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, who appeared before us.
Member's Statement - February 1, 2021
On February 1, 2021, I made a statement in the House of Commons commemorating the 81st anniversary of the first mass Polish deportation to Siberia and the Soviet Union:
“February 10th marks the 81st anniversary of the first mass deportation of Polish citizens to Siberia in the Soviet Union during World War Two. More than one million were forcefully displaced; many died from disease, starvation and terrible conditions. Most never returned to their homeland.
“Because of the pandemic, the Canadian Polish Club is unable to organize a commemoration. A prominent community figure of Nepean, Ms. Alice Basarke, was born during the deportation. Her family escaped to refugee settlements in India and her father joined the Royal Air Force. After the war, her family emigrated to Canada.
“Let us not forget about this tragedy. Not only Alice’s story, but of all the other survivors. A story of hardship and amazing resilience.”
